Where to Find Cash in Akumal: Tips for Travelers

Exploring Akumal means enjoying stunning beachfront rentals, exciting outdoor activities, delicious dining and shopping opportunities. To fully experience what Akumal offers, you’ll need Mexican pesos, the national currency. Here’s a guide on obtaining pesos and whether you need to bring them for your trip.

Do I Need to Bring Pesos?

While most businesses in Akumal (about 97%) accept credit cards, having some pesos is always a good idea. Pesos come in handy for small expenses and tipping, an integral part of the local culture. Workers such as servers, caretakers, housekeeping staff, tour guides, and drivers rely on tips. Even if your transportation is prepaid, it usually doesn’t include tips, and if you’re staying in an upper-level condo, tipping someone to help with your luggage is customary.

Where Can I Get Pesos?

At the Airport:

When you arrive at Cancun or Tulum International airports, you’ll find several RED ATMs. These are ATMs in network with major banks that offer the best fees and exchange rates compared to privately owned ATMs such as Cashola. Take a moment to withdraw some pesos before leaving the airport. This small step can make your arrival in Akumal smoother, ensuring you have cash for immediate needs.

Local Banks and ATMs:

Exchanging money at a bank in your home country is an option, though the exchange rate may not be as favorable. Luckily, many ATMs (known as “Cajero,” pronounced ka-heh-roe) along Riviera Maya, starting at the airport. You can ask your shuttle or cab driver to stop at one on your way to Akumal. Additionally, significant supermarkets like Chedraui or Soriana have ATMs available.

How Many ATMs Are There?

Numerous ATMs are available throughout the Riviera Maya. In Akumal, a RED ATM is located behind the reception office for Las Casitas at the arch.

Pro Tips on Using ATMs

Selecting the Right ATM:

In Mexico, the best option is to use an ATM with the RED logo. These ATMs are connected to major banks and usually charge lower fees than independent machines.

Getting the Best Exchange Rate:

When withdrawing cash from an ATM, you’ll be asked to accept the exchange rate provided by the local bank. Often, your home bank offers a better exchange rate. When prompted, decline the regional bank’s rate by selecting “Rechazar” or “No Accepto.”
